Military Uniform Symbolises State Authority – Gen. Irabor Weighs In on Wike–Naval Officer Clash

In Abuja on Thursday, former Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor (rtd) delivered a pointed address during the 21st All Nigeria Editors’ Conference (ANEC 2025), asserting that the recent altercation between Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and a naval officer is about far more than interpersonal conflict—it touches on the very respect owed to the state. 

“The uniform is not about who is wearing it; it represents the authority of the state,” Gen. Irabor emphasised, warning that any act of public disrespect toward uniformed personnel translates into an affront on Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Irabor reminded his audience that even within the armed forces there are strict codes of conduct: “Even as a General, I cannot slap my soldier. If I do, I will face disciplinary action.” He condemned media and public commentary that miss the larger picture—namely that the uniform carries the dignity and order of the state, not merely the rank of the wearer.

The retired general further expressed alarm at what he described as a decline in civic education and an erosion of respect for national institutions, emphasising that the rule of law must prevail over personal power or informal intimidation.
