Nigeria Convicts Nnamdi Kanu on Terrorism Charges — IPOB Leader Sentenced to Life

A Nigerian Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on seven terrorism-related charges. Judge James Omotosho, presiding over the case, ruled that the prosecution presented “incontrovertible evidence” linking Kanu’s broadcasts and directives to violent acts in the southeast.

Among the most serious accusations, prosecutors said Kanu used Radio Biafra — a London-based station he founded — to issue incitements for violence, guide bomb-making for government-building attacks, and enforce violent “stay-at-home” orders across the Igbo-dominated region. These Monday “sit-at-home” orders, once a form of protest, were described in court as having paralyzed the southeast and contributing to security instability.

Kanu has long campaigned for the re-establishment of Biafra, the defunct state that attempted to secede in the late 1960s. Judge Omotosho emphasized in his verdict that while “the right to self-determination is a political right,” any bid for it must adhere to the Nigerian constitution — actions outside that framework would be considered illegal.

Despite prosecutors pushing for the death penalty, the court opted for a life sentence, with the judge citing global condemnation of capital punishment and his own belief in tempering justice with mercy. The decision underscores the delicate balancing act of punishing alleged terrorism while avoiding the ultimate penalty.

Kanu’s reaction to the verdict was defiant. He had earlier dismissed his legal team, refused to mount a defense, and argued that the court lacked jurisdiction over him. He was even removed from court prior to the judgment after a tense outburst. His position has been that the charge sheet does not cite any extant Nigerian law that legalizes the case against him.
